In a major development in the friction within the Heineken Cup, the Welsh clubs have put their support behind a breakaway English and French competition. This is a major blow for the ERC and in turn a major boost for the English and French clubs. The planned mediation talks are supposed to be taking place at this moment!
As it stands, if the warring factions are unable to come to a resolution we could see two separate competitions, with the French (minus Toulon possibly), English and Welsh clubs on 1 side and the Scottish, Irish and Italian clubs on the other!
A club competition involving just the Scots, Italians and us just wouldn’t work. The Welsh clubs may have forced the hands of the other Celtic Nations to abandon the Heineken. The Welsh clubs had previously given their support to the ERC so I’m unsure what changed their minds.
I don’t know where this leaves the Rabo. Or the legal ramifications of the split. The IRB stated that any breakaway competition had to be given their consent and the English and French clubs didn’t have any support from the Rugby Unions in their respective countries. This all seems to have changed.
